Capalaba is a suburb located with the Redlands, approximately 20 kilometres from the Brisbane CBD. According to the 2016 census the suburb recorded a population of over 17,000 people.
The name of the suburb originates from the Indigenous Yugarabul word for the ringtail possum, a marsupial native in the area. European settlement began in the area during the 1850s led by lumberjacks, farmers and sawmill operators. During the 20th century, Capalaba grew significantly and became a major source of freshwater for the Redland Shire ue to the construction of the Leslie Harrison Dam. The population grew and the introduction of industrial and commercial areas were established- which are still present today.
Capalaba is home to large shopping and commercial centres, a major bus station as well as light industrial zones surrounded by residential streets and bushland. The suburb is the second most popular suburb In the Redlands.
Neighbouring suburbs include Alexandra Hills, Burbank, Sheldon, Chandler and Capalaba West.
