Checking your Trees after Storm Season

The floods in Queensland and New South Wales are on track to be one of Australia's worst-ever natural disasters. After all the wind and the rain we have had, have you thought about how it can negatively impact your trees’ health, while potentially threatening the safety of you and those around you?

When inspecting your trees, ensure you inspect from the ground up. If you suspect a hazardous condition, immediately contact your utility company, and consult a professional Brisbane Arborist who has the experience and equipment to conduct the inspection safely.

Look for leaning trees:

People often assume that if a tree did not fall during the storm, then it will continue to hold its ground.  Unfortunately this is not always the case, and if your tree falls, it can significantly damage your property.  Inspect your property, and if any trees are leaning after a storm, then get in contact with an expert to determine if a tree removal is necessary.

Check power lines:

Whilst inspecting each tree for damage, ensure you keep an eye for any wires that are in contact with tree branches. High winds can loosen power lines or break branches, allowing trees and wires to come in contact with one another. If you see any wires touching trees, then you should get in contact with an expert to prune your trees on your property.

Search for broken branches:

Broken branches can be a huge hazard to your property and even yourself if left broken. Check your trees for cracked, broken, or even split branches after severe weather. Brisbane in particular, has experienced severe storm season in recent times, so ensure that your trees have been inspected by a professional.

Inspect your trees for the following defects:

  • Multiple trunks

  • Weakly attached branches

  • Cavities, large decay pockets, and other evidence of decay

  • Trunk and branch cracks

  • Hanging or broken branches

  • Dead branches

Get in contact with a professional arborist to come out and assess the storm damage of your trees, and explain the best way to repair the tree if salvageable.

Don’t leave it too late to get your trees pruned or removed, a tree that doesn’t seem hazardous can significantly damage your property.
